 Chen Lu is a senior student major in software engineering at Shanghai Jiaotong University. He is now working for Baidu, a well-known IT company which owns China's biggest search engine.
Chen's vocation in computers began as a hobby when he was a high school student, but what made him choose software engineering as his major was an attractive promotion in the recruitment exhibition for new students. At that time Chen also met on of the vice dean of the Software engineering college and he began to really like his major and finally he realized his dream.
In the past four years of his studies, Chen was always very busy. He said it was very clear to him that some of the courses in the university were out of date and that the IT industry was developing very fast. So he paid more attention to self-study as well as the course and homework. Chen participated in a lot of software projects in his spare time. He still remembers he earned 3,000 yuan after he built a website for other students in two weeks. He also took part in the activities of some of the students' organizations where he met different people and learned from others. Chen said that for a software major student, the happiest time is when others can use your software. On one occasion, Chen developed a program and posted it on the Internet where it was noticed by others who came to Chen and asked him to work with them although they had never met before. Chen became the leader of the project they were working on and they are all still friends today.
Chen Chose to work for Baidu because he thinks the Internet is an amazing industry. He said why I do something is because this thing can affect others. And the Internet really has this kind of power. Another reason he chose baidu is that he also want to have his own business some time in the furure because Li YanHong, the CEO of Baidu has said there are forever 30 days from now to the day when Baidu will be bankrupt.
When talking about his future, Chen said he wants to really learn something at Baidu because there are so many talents in this industry and he has a long way to go. He also has a plan to travel around the world when he is 28. He will fight to meet this target and maybe one day he will start his own business.
Chen also said he finds many of the people in the IT industry blunder about in it. It is so easy to become a millionaire here and you will hear of companies merging with others constantly. That distracts people from fully focusing on the technical side of IT. Chen believes he should resist all kinds of seduction and finally he will succeed.
